What the service is
Carpentry covers the timber structure and the timber finish: framing, studwork, joists and roof timbers at first fix, then linings, casings, door hanging, mouldings and finishing at second fix. It also takes in repairs to floors, joists and frames that have moved, sagged or rotted.

Timber structure failures announce themselves slowly, which is exactly why they get expensive: by the time the symptom is obvious, the cause has been working away for a while.
Movement spreads to the finishes
A deflecting joist or a loose stud wall cracks plaster, opens skirting joints and pops tile grout. You end up paying to redecorate around a problem that has not been fixed.
Rot and insect damage widen
Damp timber in a floor void or roof space does not stay local. Left alone, a repairable section becomes a structural replacement with the floor lifted.
Overloaded or notched timber is a safety risk

We come out and measure the actual space. Site visits are arranged as quickly as the size and complexity of the job allow, and they cost nothing. Measuring on site is what makes a fixed price possible, walls are rarely square, and photographs hide the details that change a price.
Scope agreed and fixed price issued
We set out what is structural, what is finishing, and what needs another trade. Where the scope is clear the quotation is a fixed price; where opening up is genuinely required first, we tell you that honestly rather than quoting a low number and revising it.
First fix, then second fix
Structural and concealed timber goes in and is checked for level, plumb and load path before anything covers it. Finishing carpentry follows once the surfaces are ready, so the visible work is fitted to a wall that is not about to change.
Handover, tidy-up and 12-month guarantee
We walk the finished work with you, deal with anything you are not happy with there and then, and clear the site. Our workmanship is covered by a 12-month guarantee on issues arising directly from our installation. Full warranty terms are confirmed as part of your quotation.

Carpentry work divides cleanly into structural and finishing, and the material and fixing choices are different for each.
Materials we work with
Structural softwood (C16/C24)
Graded, kiln-dried timber for joists, studs, rafters and trimmers, sized to span and load rather than to what is on the van.
Treated timber
Pressure-treated stock wherever timber meets masonry, concrete or the outside, because untreated timber in those positions is a rot claim waiting to happen.
Sheet materials
Structural plywood, OSB and moisture-resistant boards for decking out, sarking, and floor overlay.
Structural fixings
Joist hangers, framing anchors, timber connectors and correctly specified screws and bolts, the connection is usually the weak point, not the timber.
