A floor laid on inadequate preparation does not fail immediately; it fails after you have paid for it, furnished the room and stopped thinking about it.
Buckling and lifting
Without a correct expansion gap at the perimeter, timber and laminate expand into the walls and have nowhere to go but up. The floor lifts at the joints and the only fix is lifting and relaying it.
Hollow spots, creaks and clicking
Laid over an unlevel subfloor, the boards flex over the hollows. Joints click, locking systems wear, and the floor gets noisier every month.
Moisture damage from below
A subfloor that has not been checked for damp will push moisture into timber flooring, causing cupping, staining and eventually failure of the whole installation.
Trip hazards and gappy edges
Badly finished thresholds and unfilled perimeter gaps look unfinished and catch feet and vacuum cleaners.

How the job runs from first call to guarantee
Your call and initial questions
You ring 07901 993084 or send the estimate form. We ask enough about the property, the scope and your timescale to know whether the job suits us and when we could realistically start. If it is not work we can do well, we say so at that point rather than after a wasted visit.
Free site visit and measure
We come out and measure the actual space. Site visits are arranged as quickly as the size and complexity of the job allow, and they cost nothing. Measuring on site is what makes a fixed price possible, walls are rarely square, and photographs hide the details that change a price.
Subfloor assessed and fixed price issued
We check level, soundness and moisture before pricing, and include the preparation in the quotation rather than raising it as an extra once the old floor is up. Where the scope is clear, the written price is fixed.
Prepare, level, lay and trim
The old covering comes up, the subfloor is repaired and levelled, the board is acclimatised and laid with correct expansion allowance, and the job is finished with skirtings or beading, thresholds and trims.
Handover, tidy-up and 12-month guarantee
We walk the finished work with you, deal with anything you are not happy with there and then, and clear the site. Our workmanship is covered by a 12-month guarantee on issues arising directly from our installation. Full warranty terms are confirmed as part of your quotation.

In detail
Materials, methods and variations of flooring
Board type, subfloor condition and room use all interact, the right floor for a kitchen is rarely the right floor for a bedroom.
Materials we work with
Solid timber
Full-thickness hardwood, sandable and refinishable many times over. Most sensitive to moisture and movement, so it needs a dry, stable subfloor and proper acclimatisation.
Engineered timber
A real wood wear layer on a stable plywood core. More tolerant of humidity swings and generally the better choice over underfloor heating.
Laminate
Hard-wearing photographic wear layer on a board core. Cost-effective and scratch-resistant, but unforgiving about level and about standing water.
LVT and vinyl plank
Water-tolerant and quiet underfoot, and the most demanding of all on subfloor flatness, because it follows every imperfection beneath it.
Subfloor materials
Levelling compound, ply overlay and board repairs, the part of the job that decides how everything above it performs.
Variations of this service
Floating installation
Click or glued-joint boards over underlay, isolated from the subfloor and reliant on correct expansion gaps.
Secret-nailed and glued-down
Timber fixed to joists or bonded to a prepared base, used where a solid, non-hollow feel is wanted.
Subfloor levelling and overlay
Ply overlay or levelling compound to bring a poor base up to standard before fitting.
Timber floor repair
Replacing damaged boards, refixing loose ones and remedying creaks in existing floors.
Trims, thresholds and perimeter
