Overview

What decking & fencing covers, and who it is for

What the service is

Garden decking design and installation, fencing, gates and posts, sub-frames, joists and support structures, outdoor steps, balustrades and handrails, plus repairs to existing decks and fences.

Who it is for

Homeowners adding usable outdoor space, anyone replacing a deck that has gone soft or a fence that blew over, landlords tidying up an outside area, and businesses needing outdoor seating or boundary work.

When it is needed

When boards flex or feel spongy underfoot, when the deck has become slippery and green every winter, when fence posts have rotted at ground level, after storm damage, or when an unused patch of garden could be a usable terrace.

Why professional help matters

Outdoor timber in the west of Scotland is under constant attack from rain, and almost every decking and fencing failure traces to two things: water that could not drain away, and posts or bearers set into ground that held moisture against the timber. The visible boards are the cheap part. The substructure, the drainage and the ground fixings are what decide whether you are rebuilding in three years or fifteen.

What's included

  • Garden decking design and installation
  • Fencing, gates and posts
  • Sub-frames, joists and support structures
  • Steps, balustrades and outdoor handrails
  • Repairs to existing decking and fences

What it costs to leave it

What happens when this work is put off

A failing deck or fence is not just an appearance problem, both carry weight and both fail in ways that hurt people.

Rotten joists give way underfoot

By the time a board feels spongy, the bearer under it has usually been wet for a long time. Decking collapses at the substructure, and it does so with people standing on it.

Slippery surfaces in wet weather

Poor drainage and shaded, permanently damp boards grow algae. Steps and raised decks then become genuinely dangerous in Scottish winters.

Fence posts fail at ground level

The rot line is at the soil surface. A post that looks sound above ground will snap there in the first serious wind, taking panels and sometimes a neighbour's property with it.

Loose outdoor balustrades

A raised deck's guard rail has to stop somebody going over the edge. Fixed into rotting timber, it will not.

Common mistakes we are called in to correct

  • Using untreated or internal-grade timber anywhere outdoors
  • Setting posts straight into soil with no drainage and no rot protection at the ground line
  • Building a deck with no ventilation gap and no fall, so water sits under and on it
  • Under-specifying joist spacing, which is why boards flex within a year
  • Using plain steel fixings that corrode and stain the timber

Our process

How the job runs from first call to guarantee

01

Your call and initial questions

You ring 07901 993084 or send the estimate form. We ask enough about the property, the scope and your timescale to know whether the job suits us and when we could realistically start. If it is not work we can do well, we say so at that point rather than after a wasted visit.

02

Free site visit and measure

We come out and measure the actual space. Site visits are arranged as quickly as the size and complexity of the job allow, and they cost nothing. Measuring on site is what makes a fixed price possible, walls are rarely square, and photographs hide the details that change a price.

03

Layout, materials and a fixed price

We talk through size, levels, board and post options, and what maintenance each material really needs in Scottish weather. Where the scope is clear the written quotation is a fixed price.

04

Groundwork, substructure, then boards

Ground is prepared and drained, posts and bearers are set with the right protection at ground level, the frame is squared and levelled with the correct joist spacing, and only then do the visible boards or panels go on.

05

Handover, tidy-up and 12-month guarantee

We walk the finished work with you, deal with anything you are not happy with there and then, and clear the site. Our workmanship is covered by a 12-month guarantee on issues arising directly from our installation. Full warranty terms are confirmed as part of your quotation.

The benefits

What you actually get for the money

Substructure built for the weather

Drainage, ventilation and treated framing given the same attention as the boards you can see, because that is what determines lifespan.

Posts that stay upright

Ground fixings and post protection specified for wet Scottish soil, not for a dry summer afternoon.

No bounce underfoot

Joist spacing set for the board and the span, so the deck feels solid from the first day to the last.

Honest material advice

A straight answer on softwood, hardwood and composite, what each costs, how each weathers here, and what maintenance each needs.

Safe steps and balustrades

Outdoor handrails and guards fixed into sound structure, which matters most on raised decks.

12-month workmanship guarantee

Covers issues arising directly from our installation, with full terms confirmed in your quotation.

In detail

Materials, methods and variations of decking & fencing

Outdoor timber selection is a trade-off between upfront cost, lifespan and maintenance, and the west of Scotland climate shifts that balance compared with drier parts of the UK.

Materials we work with

Pressure-treated softwood

The standard for substructures, posts and most decking. Cost-effective and, when properly treated and detailed, long-lived. Needs re-treating at cut ends.

Hardwood decking

Denser, more durable and better in exposed positions, at a higher upfront cost and with pre-drilling required for fixings.

Composite boards

Low maintenance, no annual treating, stable colour. Demands a correctly built and correctly spaced substructure, because it is less forgiving of a poor frame.

Posts and ground fixings

Concrete-set posts, post spikes and metal post supports, chosen for the soil and the exposure, all aimed at keeping timber out of standing moisture.

Corrosion-resistant fixings

Stainless and coated screws and connectors, because plain steel rusts, stains the boards and eventually fails.

Variations of this service

Ground-level decking

Terraces directly over a prepared, drained base, with ventilation designed in beneath.

Raised and multi-level decking

Framed and posted structures with steps and balustrades, where structural detailing and guard fixings matter most.

Fencing and gates

Close-board, panel and slatted fencing, gates and posts, set for the exposure the boundary actually gets.

Steps and outdoor handrails

Safe access between levels, with consistent rise and secure handrails.

Repairs and refurbishment

Replacing failed boards, joists and posts, and bringing a sound but tired deck or fence back into use.

Residential work

Domestic decking and fencing is planned around access, garden use and neighbouring boundaries, with spoil and waste cleared and the garden left tidy at the end of each working day.

Commercial work

For commercial outdoor areas the specification moves towards heavier traffic and durability, with work programmed around trading so the outside space is available when you need to use it.
